How Crafting Together Brings People Closer
The Wicker Stories Workshops at MURO Restaurant in Rzeszów
Can a few willow rods help bring people together? As it turns out, they certainly can! Add a welcoming atmosphere, a glass of wine and a little patience, and you have all the ingredients for a truly memorable experience.
That is exactly what happened at our “Weaving with Wine” event at MURO Restaurant in the heart of Rzeszów, Poland. We brought together people who shared a curiosity about traditional craftsmanship, a desire to learn something new and an interest in spending their time a little differently.
This was not a corporate training session or a private team-building event. It was an open workshop for anyone who wanted to try their hand at traditional willow weaving.
And it is at gatherings like these that you really begin to see how bringing people together through creativity can build meaningful connections.
Around the Same Table, We Are All Beginners
In everyday life, we come from different professions, backgrounds and age groups, with different interests and experiences. But when we sit down together, a bundle of willow rods appears in front of us and the instructor demonstrates the first weaving technique, those differences suddenly seem far less important.
Some people discover a natural talent for weaving straight away. Others need three attempts before they can persuade a stubborn willow rod to cooperate. And then there is always someone who asks, with a disarming smile, whether their basket is really supposed to look like that.
And that is when the most valuable part of the workshop begins: conversation, laughter, helping one another and making new connections naturally.
Willow weaving has a remarkable quality - it keeps your hands busy while encouraging people to open up and talk.
During our workshop at MURO on 31 August 2026, we saw just how effective traditional crafts can be in helping people switch off from their everyday routines. No artistic experience is needed. All it takes is curiosity and a willingness to try something new.
What If We Organised a Workshop Like This for Your Team?
This brings us to an idea we are increasingly keen to develop at The Wicker Stories: willow weaving workshops as a creative alternative to traditional corporate team-building activities.
Corporate team-building events do not have to revolve around another group dinner, bowling night or motivational presentation.
Instead, employees can enjoy something completely different - an experience where everyone creates something together, learns new skills and discovers abilities they never knew they had.
Imagine a team whose working days are usually spent in front of computers, analysing sales figures, managing projects or dealing with customers. Suddenly, they are all sitting around the same table, willow rods in their hands.
A manager asks a colleague for help with a tricky weave. Someone from the accounts department turns out to have extraordinary patience, while a usually quiet team member starts sharing stories.
Job titles and workplace hierarchies no longer matter. What matters is the experience everyone shares.
And that is precisely why craft workshops can be such a valuable way to bring a team closer together.
Seven Reasons to Organise a Corporate Willow Weaving Workshop
1. Building Relationships Naturally
Working together encourages spontaneous conversation. Employees have an opportunity to get to know one another beyond their usual responsibilities, in an atmosphere that makes it easier to relax and connect.
2. Team Building Without Unnecessary Competition
Not everyone enjoys sporting challenges or competitive team activities. Willow weaving offers an inclusive alternative, allowing people to take part regardless of their physical fitness or previous experience.
3. Taking a Break from Technology
In a world full of phones, notifications and screens, focusing on a natural material can be a refreshing change. The rhythmic movement of weaving helps people slow down and concentrate on the present moment.
4. Developing Patience and Creativity
Willow weaving teaches us that things do not always go to plan on the first attempt. Sometimes we need to change our approach, try again or ask someone for help. Sound familiar? Teamwork in the workplace often works in much the same way.
5. Encouraging Cooperation and Mutual Support
Participants watch one another's progress, exchange tips and help each other through the more challenging stages. It is a natural opportunity to practise communication and cooperation.
6. The Satisfaction of Making Something by Hand
At the end of the workshop, participants can take home their own handmade wicker creations. It is much more than an ordinary corporate gift - it is something they have made themselves, with memories of a shared experience woven into it.
7. Discovering Culture and Local Heritage
The Wicker Stories workshops also introduce participants to the history of Polish craftsmanship. This gives a corporate team-building event an additional educational and cultural dimension.
Rudnik nad Sanem - A Town with a Rich Willow Weaving Heritage
Our workshops are about much more than learning how to weave. They are also an opportunity to share the story of a remarkable region of Poland.
Rudnik nad Sanem, located in the Podkarpacie region of south-eastern Poland, has been associated with basket weaving for generations and is often referred to as Poland's Wicker Capital.
The local wicker industry began to flourish in the second half of the 19th century, largely thanks to the efforts of Count Ferdinand Hompesch. In 1878, a basket-making school was established in Rudnik, playing an important role in training craftspeople and developing the local industry.
Over the following decades, weaving skills were passed down through families from one generation to the next. Making wicker baskets became a livelihood for many local people, and products crafted in Rudnik found their way far beyond Poland's borders.
Willow was used to create everyday essentials, including household baskets, storage trunks, furniture, cradles and transport baskets.
Today, this tradition meets contemporary design. Natural wicker is increasingly finding its place in modern interiors, hotels, restaurants and innovative design projects.
At The Wicker Stories, we want to show that traditional craftsmanship is not simply a relic of the past. It is a living part of our culture, something we can continue to develop, rediscover and pass on to future generations.
International recognition of Polish basketry is particularly significant. In 2025, traditional basketry practices in Poland were inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
This recognition highlights the exceptional value of skills that have been part of everyday life for generations in Poland's basket-making regions, including Rudnik nad Sanem.
What Does a Corporate Team-Building Workshop with The Wicker Stories Look Like?
There are plenty of possibilities!
We can organise workshops in restaurants, hotels, event venues, company offices or as part of a corporate retreat.
We tailor each programme to the nature of the event, the number of participants and the time available.
A workshop can include:
-
A short, engaging introduction to the history of willow weaving and the basket-making traditions of Rudnik nad Sanem.
-
An introduction to natural willow and the basic techniques of traditional basket weaving.
-
The opportunity to create your own wicker piece with guidance from experienced instructors.
-
Plenty of conversation, shared experiences and enjoyment along the way.
-
Group photographs and the chance to take home your very own handmade basket.
We can plan the workshop as the main attraction of an event or combine it with a company dinner, Christmas celebration or conference.
With the right programme and arrangements, our workshops can accommodate both small teams and larger groups.
Restaurants and Hotels Can Create Memorable Experiences Too
Our second “Weaving with Wine” event at MURO Restaurant in Rzeszów showed us something else worth sharing.
Combining food, drink and traditional crafts is a wonderful way to create an event that helps a venue stand out from the crowd.
Guests come not only for dinner or a glass of wine, but also for a new experience. They learn something, meet new people and enjoy spending time together.
For restaurants and hotels, this is an opportunity to expand their offering with themed events, creative workshops and experiences designed for corporate clients.
Such events can appeal both to individual guests and to businesses looking for something a little different for their next team-building activity.
We would like to thank MURO Restaurant in Rzeszów for its hospitality and for helping us create a space where willow weaving, good conversation and a welcoming atmosphere came together so naturally.
We would also like to thank everyone who took part for their curiosity, smiles, patience and the wonderful energy they brought to the workshop.
The Wicker Stories - Let's Weave More Than Just Baskets Together!
We believe the best events are those where people are not simply spectators, but become part of a shared experience.
Willow weaving workshops offer an opportunity to slow down, discover your creativity, learn something new and see the people around you in a completely different light.
That is why we invite businesses, HR teams, event agencies, hotels, restaurants and conference organisers to work with us if they are looking for an original approach to employee team building or a creative event.
We organise willow weaving workshops in Rzeszów, throughout the Podkarpacie region and in other locations across Poland, subject to individual arrangements.
Because successful team building does not always require an elaborate programme. Sometimes all you need is a table, a few willow rods and people who want to create something together.
And if someone ends up with a slightly wonky basket? Even better – it will give everyone something to laugh about and remember!
